Tucked away among the big name shops and restaurants, that makeup the bulk of Soho, is a little cupcake sanctuary.  On Spring Street, just West of Broadway, is Baked by Melissa, a tiny kiosk serving up miniature cupcakes for approximately a dollar each.

Baked by Melissa has a fairly original concept, mini cupcakes that come in about 10 creative flavors.  Each cupcake is about the size of a dollar coin and most have frosting inserted directly in the middle forming a perfect balance between cake and frosting.

Due to its small size it is easy to over look Baked by Melissa, but one day after an early dinner with friends we decided to walk off our meal and reward ourselves with cupcakes.

Aware of the size we all decided that three to six each would be best.  A friend and myself decided to split a box of six, which cost $5.50, appose to buying three each at $3.00.  On this visit I ordered red velvet, peanut butter cup and peanut butter & jelly, each one more delicious then the last.

Orders of six cupcakes or more come in custom-made white boxes with the Bake by Melissa logo on the top.  Each box has a piece of cardboard inside with holes cut in it so that the cupcakes can sit neatly inside without worries of the frosting getting all over the box.

The miniature cupcakes are moist and bursting with flavor.  The peanut butter & jelly cupcake had to be my favorite, the jelly is inserted into the center and the frosting is peanut butter flavored.  The peanut butter cup flavored cupcake wasn’t as amazing but still moist and flavorful nonetheless.  Last but definitely not least was the red velvet cupcake, which is melt in your mouth good.  Though there is no frosting inserted into the center, the smooth cream cheese frosting piped on top of the vibrant red velvet cupcake makes this the second best red velvet cake I’ve ever had, Land of Cake Believe being my top favorite.

You can eat three different flavored cupcakes with out the post-indulgent regret you’d normally get after three full sized cupcakes, and if you’re watching out for the calories you can have just one to satisfy your sweet cravings.

I adore the idea of a one-bite cupcake and don’t really mind the price.  You could order a batch of 3 for $3, 6 for $5.50, 12 for $10, 25 for $20, 50 for $37.50 and 100 for 70.  If you’re a bit cash conscious your better off buying the cupcakes in bulk, if you buy 12 at $10 that comes out to about 84 cents a cupcake

I wouldn’t go out of my way to visit Baked by Melissa but if you’re in the neighborhood I suggest stopping in for a few of these sugary treats.
