Creativity, balanced with simple ingredients and aggressive portions pureed into something I delightfully gobbled up in this delectable corner of the Essex Street Market.   Shopsin’s has a distinct sense of Lower East Side community despite its migration from the west-side years ago.  The restaurant seats about 20 people ranging from hipsters in overall shorts and tattoos to senior citizens announcing all their health problems but whispering conversations about McDonald’s new coffee line. I stood in line reading the Times but I should’ve been studying the menu with its quirky plate names as it was two pages long with one entirely dedicated to breakfast.  Note to the wise – the line moved at a moderate pace but the three girls in front of us were unfortunately pushed back multiple times as parties of 2 were easier to sit.

Presentation, plating, and garnish are foreign words here but that is something you should truly appreciate. [Read more...]

Fette Sau is hard to find.  It does not have your typical storefront restaurant entrance.
Instead, there is a fence with a small, glowing sign on the top that says Fette Sau. It is located on Metropolitan Avenue in Williamsburg, between Roebling and Havemeyer. The front of the space is an outdoor picnic area, which is usually full by 6pm. As you walk by, you can see and small all of the delectable meats which you are about to eat.  After passing this area, you enter the restaurant which is a large, fairly industrial space. There are picnic tables set up inside where patrons dine side by side with strangers.

The menu is written daily on the chalkboard andthere is free water in the cooler. Usually there is a queue of about 5 people waiting inline to order. You place your order with the person at thecounter and then take your food to an empty table (if you are lucky.) There is also a bar where you can get beers and whiskey. The taps are all decorated with knives which is a bit intimidating at first.

All hail the legions of wannabe rockstars.

That’s the theme of the night at Rockmeisha, or what I perceived it to be.  My friend Chloe and I have always harbored secret dreams of starting a rock band (who hasn’t?).  Rockmeisha indulges you with the momentary illusion that, Yes, I’m a rockstar…AND what??!

Rockmeisha is styled exactly like izakayas (snack bars) in Japan, and is ideal for drinks and grub into the wee hours.  Not exactly a dinner place, though, as I realized at 7 p.m. when it was still light out and the vibe was dead.  The black walls contrast the white curtains flowing from the ceiling like a giant floating canopy.  Old-school pictures of Japanese pin-up girls and “Uptown Martini Bar” art deco surrounded us, finished off with cherry wood accents.
