Last month, my coworkers all began raving about a crepe cart that had set up shop near our office, serving lunch and dessert crepes for $4.99, including your choice of bottled water or lemonade.

It had been years since I’d had a crepe. The most memorable experiences were with my high school French class when we had “food day.”  Each one of us was assigned a different French treat to make and share with the class.  Someone would always bring in crepes with a generous sprinkling of powdered sugar to cover up how bland they really were.  I didn’t understand how wonderful they really were until I tried a fresh crepe during my first trip to Paris when I was twenty.

These were the memories I relived as I waited for my crepe to be prepared on the corner of 4th Avenue and 8th Street, at a cart called Tripie. The cart sits on the sidewalk outside of Cooper Union’s engineering building. [Read more...]

Burgers and Beer Sundays at Telepan

The Upper-West side on Sundays will soon be featuring more than brunch and strollers…

Starting this Sunday, Telepan will be introducing:

Sunday Burger & Beer Nite!

Telepan is expanding upon the idea of its popular $17 lunchtime burger, it will be hosting Sunday Burger & Beer, on Sunday evenings through the rest of summer.

Beer pairings include domestic and international ales and lagers available on tap and by the bottle.

For details, go to:

http://www.telepan-ny.com/beer.html

From Telepan’s press release:

“The enthusiastic response to our burger nights has prompted us to expand the concept. We have recently committed to using 100% grass-fed beef. We are buying it not only for its superior nutritional values, but because it is humanely raised, has a smaller environmental footprint and a great, enhanced flavor. Our burgers will come from Animal Welfare Approved farmer and American Grassfed Association president Dr. Patricia Whisnant and her husband Mark, who own a 4,000 acre ranch in the Missouri Ozarks.”

Also Telepan will be extending its Restaurant week prices for an entire month:

From August 4th through September 3rd:

• three course lunch for $24.07 – Wednesday thru Friday
• three course dinner for $35.00 – Monday thru Friday

Struck by a sudden craving for yoshoku (Japanized Western-style food), I eagerly awaited my visit to Hiroko’s. Tucked into a side street with a pearl-like string of white lights. Hiroko’s Place evades the eye with its decidedly non-flashy décor. Upon entrance, I was instantly charmed by the hodge-podge collection of different colored seat cushions – from leopard print to mint green – all appealing to your gastronomic sensibilities. With the push towards organic, free-range, grass-fed, hormone and antibiotic-free meats and cheeses in full swing, it isn’t surprising to see menus that proudly serve this healthier option in all of their dishes.  In addition to this trend, New Yorkers are probably noticing another in the form of quality, truck-served, street food.  So it probably shouldn’t be a surprise that someone would think to combine the two and serve grass-fed beef burgers to people looking for a quick lunch during their work day.  La Cense Beef Burger truck does exactly that, cooking up burgers “fast food style” to huge lines at various locations throughout the city. Pizza Ortolana

One of the things that I took away from eating at Luzzo’s, besides a headache and a full stomach, is unresolved bafflement at why this place has armies of devotees.

For months, I had been hearing acquaintances  rave about this place and observing hordes of people lining up trying to get into this First Avenue joint. Since, I’ve become adept at filtering out hype and focusing on the substantive characteristics of an eating establishment (those characteristics include good quality, preparation, portioning, price to quality and portioning, ambiance and service), I decided to tune out the multiple word of mouth accolades for this place, along with my skepticism of them, and try the pizza for myself.
