Candela Candela

92 Second Ave., btwn. 5th and 6th Streets,  East Village
(212) 529-2563

Cuban -Italian

It’s a well known fact that pairing cuisine styles generally doesn’t work. Such restaurants rarely do justice to either cuisine. But Candela Candela does a fair job at pulling it off. And while it may not be at the top of any trendista’s list, Candela-Candela is a low key East Village restaurant that serves up fresh, generous Italian and Cuban entrees at tabs that are reminiscent of the days when the East Village was still an edgy, bohemian part of town. This sort of charm is reflected in Candela Candela’s interior.

It has a rustic decor replete with wooden floor planks, country-style tables, tin ceilings and Cuban-inspired paintings.  Candela Candela is also graced with a cozy bar area and has a decent wine list and  serves drinks that range from the Jaeger bomb to the Mojito Martini. The swift and competent service also makes it a really good off-off Broadway pre-theater choice.

Lantern

311 Second Ave., Gramercy Park
212-777-2770

Hands down, Lantern is a Gramercy neighborhood keeper.

Why?

It’s inexpensive. It has a tasteful, contemporary New AgeAsiatic decor. O.K. it veers a bit on the très side trendy, but it’s withoutthe attitude. That makes for a relaxing atmosphere, that’s pleasing to the eye without pretension or the annoying hipster vibe.

Cashew Chicken

Lantern has an attractive bar area and now with a good array of mixed drinks, both standard and exotic as well as wines by the glass. Drink prices are comparable to your average Manhattan bar. Non-alcoholic drinks with exotic fruit juices are also an option here. [Read more...]

In yesterday’s New York Times section, food guru and author  Mark Bittman persuasively proposed that beets and goat cheese go splits-ville.

Second Avenue -the strip for cheap eats on the go or sitting down

Walking home from Second Avenue in the East Village one night
late last week, bargain meal offers kept popping onto my path from all sides.

Spice, a food and popular Thai Restaurant chain on 104 2nd Ave. and corner of E. 6th St.  is offering a $6 dinner special between the hours of 4 and 6 PM. Pretty amazing.

Nori, 129 Second Ave. at St. Mark’s Pl. was offering $1 sushi.

Cinderella Snackalicious Falafel, right next door to Nori is offering $1 falafel sandwiches. How cheap is that! You can even eat it sitting down — limited table seating available.

The best part is that all three places are within a two block radius!

I’ve not yet checked out all three of these places to be able to report on the food quality, but it’s in the works…in the meantime: yay for the options!

Beer-Barley Mussels

Beer-Barley Mussels

This unassuming LES newcomer is a true diamond in
a vast field of coal among eateries springing up in this
ultra-trendy downtown district.

For starters it features a menu that is thoroughly original
and innovative and the effects are pleasantly surprising.
While Joe Doe brands itself “seasonal American,” it’d be more aptly called
“seasonal cosmopolitan,” since the chef expertly combines flavors and ingredients from a variety
of culinary cultures. The result is that he adds vibrancy and pizazz
dishes as commonplace as cauliflower. More on this and the food
in a second. [Read more...]
