Buh Bye Sushi, Hello Noodles? 2009 Food Trends

CNN reported this morning that the anticipated food trend of 2009 will be Ramen noodles, displacing the coveted position previously held by sushi. Whether it be a natural change of food preferences or a logical response to the ICU-health status of our economy, noodles are gentler on the wallet and a way to practice cruelty-free eating. Fortunately for those of us in New York City, a rich panoply of noodle houses is at our fingertips.

Tai Thai - East Village/ LES

This cozy, kitschy Thai eatery– and its Williamsburg pendant– offer a fair variety of noodles, seafood dishes and stir fries for its size. Though the menu is generic, the output is average to above average for what you pay. The decor is a charming cross between Thai pop culture and movie memorabilia and traditional Buddhist touches. At the Manhattan location, the tables are comfortably arranged along two pale red windowed-brick walls. [Read more...]

The Emerald Inn Stays

Manager Charles Campbell Tending Bar at the Emerald Inn

The slumped economy has given us one for the team. The rent increases that were slated for The Emerald Inn, a beloved West Side watering hole, located on 205 Columbus Ave at 69th St., have been deferred.

Today’s NY Times reported that the Emerald Inn, an institution on Manhattan’s Upper West side since the forties, was expected to join the long list of places scheduled to shut its doors due to rent increases. In Emerald’s case, it had been set to double. The bar was expected to close in April. Thanks to the economic slowdown, the landlord offered it a lease renewal with a reduced increase in the range of a couple of thousands allowing the Emerald to hang around for two more years. Hurrah for the team!

Nice to see that there is a flip-side to this recession: namely some sorely-needed human-scale conditions in this town.

Almond

Chef-restauranteuring duo and Brooklyn homies Eric Lemonides and Jason Weiner have extended their Bridgehampton beauty to Manhattan, bringing us a Flatiron “keeper” with Almond.

The menu consists of solid, hearty home-style fare prepared with farmed-fresh ingredients. American favorites are paired with French classics like foie gras mousse and duck confit. The rustic decor, replete with white-washed planks on the walls adds to Almond’s French inflected, down-home charm, as do the reasonable tabs.
